Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
